The Millard Tornado
On June 8th, 2008, the Millard area and The Next Step... Dancing with Maren were hit by an EF-2 tornado
that caused considerable damage. The studio suffered major damage to the roof, the air conditioning units,
walls, and floors.
As the tornado came through, it pulled one air conditioning unit off its supports, and threw the other unit
behind the building. With the air conditioning unit gone, water poured into the studio. The water damaged
the paint, caused the ballet bars to pull away from the walls, and caused the floor in the enclosed studio to
swell and buckle.
All this just two weeks before the Competition Company was to compete at Nationals in Oklahoma City.
And yet, they did compete and compete well! "No tornado can stop the Next Step!!!"
More than two months after the storm, the walls were repainted, the ballet bars secured, the air was back
on (August 13th), and a brand new floor in the enclosed studio (finished August 15th)!
